A tiny and unashamedly ‘Nott’num’ gift shop has been named one of the UK’s best small businesses.
From Stabbo to ‘Uknol, Dukki Gifts, in St James’s Street, takes everything weird and wonderful about Robin Hood county – including its iconic greeting ‘Ay up me duck’ – and puts it on coasters, key rings, t-shirts and mugs.
The community heart of the business, which launched in 2014, is what caught the eye of the Small Business Saturday judges, who plucked Dukki from more than five million other businesses across the UK to make its Small Biz 100 list.
“Small Business Saturday’s increasing popularity means it was harder than ever to choose just 100 of this country’s incredible 5.6 million small businesses to showcase, but we believe those we have chosen are true representatives of the diverse, creative and inspiring heroes at the heart of our communities,” said director of Small Business Saturday, Michelle Ovens MBE.
In the 100 days running up to Small Business Saturday, on December 7, the campaign will spotlight each of the Small Biz 100, as part of its mission to celebrate their success and encourage the nation to shop local.
Dukki’s day will be on October 15, when owners Heidi Hargreaves and partner Ian Jones will be celebrating with a gift giveaway, discounted items and a late night shopping experience – complete with free fizz on arrival.
Heidi said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be chosen as one of the Small Business 100. It’s an honour to be included with so many other amazing small businesses.
“Our brand is built on our pride for Nottingham and it’s surrounding counties, and keeping regional dialects in general alive.
“We love being based in the heart of the Midlands. Nottingham is such a great city to trade from, and boasts more independent businesses than any other city outside of London.
“The support for small businesses is huge here, and this is yet another reason to celebrate.”
