NORFOLK – The owners of a small business in Norfolk have been nominated for a national award after being named the Small Business Owners of the Year for the state of Nebraska.
Weiland Doors was founded in 1984 by Leon Weiland, who began crafting custom doors for the local meat packing plant as an effort to pay back the debt on his family farm.
After growing the business for 25 years, Leon turned over control of his business to his son, Carl, and sons-in-law, Jason Ash and Rob Haake in 2011. Over the past 7-years the new managers have tripled the size of the company. Even though the next generation does most of the day to day management in the company, they are happy to see Leon and his wife Jean get rewarded for how far the company has come in 35 years.
“They really are the ambassadors of our company in so many respects. Even though they don’t hold office positions here, it’s really meaningful to them to be able to receive the award on behave of the whole company.” – Carl Weiland
Leon and Jean will join the winners from each of the rest of the 50 states for celebratory ceremonies in Washington, D.C. on May 5th and 6th where they will be honored with their individual awards, and the Small Business Administration will announce the National Small Business Person of the Year, which they are also nominated for.
