According to the National Retail Federation, the average
American plans to spend $1,007 for the winter holidays.

For every $100 spent locally, studies have found that $48 –
$68 stays in the area in the form of salaries for local residents as well as
their purchases. This is why the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority and
the local UGA Small Business Development Center at Georgia Southern University
are bringing “Accelerate Your Retail Business” to Statesboro on Tuesday in time
for local businesses to ensure they’re ready for the winter holiday shopping
rush.

 Valerie McElveen,
area director for the UGA SBDC at Georgia Southern University explained,             “Business owners who attend this
class will learn three key human resources practices, how to reach          customers in today’s digital
world and other business and sales strategies that impact profitability.              They’ll leave with a copy of our
Retail Business Checklist and many other tools to improve their retail     performance.”

Development Authority Executive Director Allen Muldrew
encouraged area business owners to take advantage of the learning opportunity.

“Our local business compete in a changing and challenging
environment,” he said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to expand our retail
knowledge.”

The class runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and costs $49, which
includes lunch. It will be held in the Business          Innovation Group (BIG)
classroom at 58 E Main, Suite D on Tuesday.

With 17 offices around the state, the University of Georgia
Small Business Development Center is charged with growing Georgia’s
businesses.
